I have been fortunate to be a part of two books. Shooting the cover and numerous inside photos for one, and writing the foreword for another.

I came up with the concept for this cover shot, and am eagerly awaiting the release of the book in April of 2010 (It is going to be backed by the Women's Professional Soccer League). Along with shooting the cover, I have close to a dozen shots that are included within the book. It was a pleasure working with Gloria Averbuch, she is a well renowned and respected author, and has written for people such as Brandi Chastain and Anson Dorrance.

This book is going to be an amazing resource for athletes everywhere, especially females. The book has countless recipes from world class soccer players, and covers countless issues female athletes face; from preparing yourself nutritionally to be at the top of your game, to eating disorders, to proper hydration. Gloria and Nancy have thought of everything, and this will be an amazing resource for athletes across the board!

I was asked to write the foreword to Harry A. Merlo's memoir, after he heard me speak at a University of Portland scholarship luncheon.

Here is what I wrote:

Foreword

My name is Cori Alexander, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Portland in Portland, oregon, and a proud member of the 2005 National Championship women's soccer team. I am honored that Harry merlo, who is friends with many famous and influential business and political leaders, has asked me to write the foreword to his autobiography.

I am just one of the many people who can say that "Harry Merlo made a positive difference in my life." The fact is that college would merely have been a dream for me had had I not received the Harry Merlo Women's Soccer Scholarship. A while back, I wrote Mr. Merlo a thank you note, just to be sure he truly knew how much his generosity meant. I was surprised when I received a letter from him in return. He thanked me for my note, and he shared a story about his mother, who would save her pennies, nickels, and dimes in a jar, and twice a year would donate that money to Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. She told her children, "If you won't share a dollar, you'll never share a million."

Those words inspired me then, and they inspire me still. In fact, thye inspired me to give a speech at the University of Portland where I pledged to Mr. Merlo that I would pay his generosity back by walking in his footsteps, by making a difference in the lives of others, and by challenging my peers to do the same. I told my "twenty something" friends and teammates that we may not have that much money, but we can still be a positive force. We can help at a local Ronald McDonald House, volunteer at the Humane Society, or kick the soccer ball around with a child in need of a role model.

I believe the reason Mr. Merlo asked me to write this foreword is to issue the same challenge to all those who read this book. I am honored to do just that. If you enjoy "Vintage Merlo" as much as I did...if you find inspiration in the courage and common sense of Mama Merlo and in the remarkable life story of her son, Harry, then I challenge you to "pay it forward" and give of your time, talents and treasures.

The Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good pit together that overwhelm the world." I invite you to join with Mr. Merlo and me in overwhelming the world!
